7 p.m. - THE SHOOTING with Monte Hellman Live!

Rated Unknown; 82min; Director:Monte Hellman (1967)

We are honored to welcome a guest who played a huge role in helping to drag the American movie industry out of the old, bad stagnant period of Hollywood at its worst and into the vibrant, expressive period of the late sixties and early to mid seventies. I suspect we all know Coppola and Altman and Scorsese and Ashby - but there's another towering figure who belongs in that pantheon, and for one night only that man - Monte Hellman - will be here at the Alamo. From his time in the Roger Corman school of film, grinding out films alongside Francis Ford Coppola, Robert Towne, Jack Hill and others, through his first triumphs; the so-called existential westerns RIDE IN THE WHIRLWIND and THE SHOOTING; and through his most highly regarded film - the road movie to end all road movies, TWO LANE BLACKTOP, Hellman was right in the middle of it all with cameras blazing!

Monte Hellman will also be in attendance for a screening of his Road Movie classic TWO LANE BLACKTOP.

Look for the DOUBLE FEATURE ticket price. Only $16 for both films and you can keep your seat for the Weird Wednesday presentation of Monte's BETTER WATCH OUT!

Even though Hellman has only made a dozen or so films, three of them have been westerns. He clearly loves the form, even as he seemingly demolishes it here. A posse consisting of cowboy Warren Oates, mysterious woman Millie Perkins, fashionplate bounty hunter Jack Nicholson and slow-on-the-uptake Will Hutchins track a wanted man through the barren, hostile desert. Each member of the party seemingly has a mysterious motivation, and the audience itself has to remain engaged to understand why. While this narrative strategy was acclaimed as avant-garde by European critics, Hellman later explained that he simply ripped out ten pages of exposition because it slowed things down too much.

9:30 p.m. - TWO LANE BLACKTOP with Monte Hellman Live!

Rated R; 102min; Director:Monte Hellman (1971)

What THE SHOOTING did for the western, TWO LANE BLACKTOP did for the road movie. Two laconic drag racers, identified only as The Driver and The Mechanic (musicians James Taylor and Dennis Wilson) trawl the back roads of America making their living by challenging strangers to drag races. They pick up a female hitchhiker who immediately disrupts the harmony of the mobile family unit and then encounter another drag-racing drifter, Warren Oates (never better), who they challenge to a cross-country race along Route 66 for "pink slips" (aka car titles). That's it. And it's one of the greatest, purest, most honest films ever made.

MIDNIGHT - I LUV VIDEO's FREE WEIRD WEDNESDAY -

BETTER WATCH OUT with MONTE HELLMAN live!

Movies have existed for roughly 120 years, and in that time, we’ve seen a whooole lot of killer Santas. But no murderous icon of holiday joy can compare to the leading men of the SILENT NIGHT DEADLY NIGHT series. Maverick filmmaker Hellman was courageous enough to try his hand at the only horror franchise powerful enough to traumatize children with its box art alone. The result is a particularly pathological foray into Santanic savagery starring terror icon Bill Moseley. That’s him on the left, and you’ll note that those aren’t visions of sugarplums dancing in his head. So sit back with us and legendary director Hellman and let your happy memories of the Christmas season be mangled into unrecognizable heaps of shrieking agony. Hellman’s classic films THE SHOOTING and TWO LANE BLACKTOP will screen earlier in the evening.

Very special thanks to Charles Lieurance of I Luv Video for making these events possible.

I LUV VIDEO & UNITED STATES ART AUTHORITY PRESENT...

A COCKTAIL MIXER/AUTOGRAPH SIGNING with MONTE HELLMAN!!!

At UNITED STATES ART AUTHORITY - Part of the SPIDERHOUSE/I LUV VIDEO/ECO-CLEAN Compound/Enter through the Spiderhouse Patio!

I Luv Video & United States Art Authority are proud to sponsor a cocktail gathering featuring legendary director Monte Hellman as the guest of honor. After immersing yourself in the director's films at the Alamo Drafthouse on Wednesday, come & get some one-on-one time with this amazing maverick director. I Luv Video will be passing out cool postcards at the Wednesday showings & they're certainly fit for autographing, but feel free to bring in your Criterion Two-Lane Blacktop DVD sets, posters, Beach Boys/James Taylor albums, '55 chevys...whatever & we're sure Monte will find a way to sign them for you. But mostly this event is just an alcohol-lubricated wind-down from the previous evening's cinematic blow-out, so come, relax, chat with a legend & let him know how much the films meant to you before he leaves Austin. Event co-sponsor Charles Lieurance will be playing appropriate music & film clips during the party. The cocktail mixer is free & open to the public.
